Youth Aviation Academy
Introduction to Aviation Day
Twice a year the Heart of Carolina Chapter (HOCC) of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. provides a half day program that provides a basic introduction to:
- The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen
- The world of aviation
- General aviation aircraft
Youth Aviation Academy
In order to provide experiences that will continue to broaden the youth experience within the aviation community, the Heart of Carolina Chapter established a Youth Academy. This academy takes 9 thru 11 year old youth (Cadet Flight) through middle school ages ( 1st Flight) and teaches the basic knowledge of aviation up to preparation for flight training.
Several members of HOCC are also members of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) which is the key sponsor of the Young Eagles Program. This program provides a free first flight to youth between the ages of 8 and 17. The HOCC Youth Academy will dovetail with the EAA program which, in addition to the Young Eagles Flight, provides:
- EAA student membership
- Complete flight training courses
- 1st flight lesson
- Flight Training Scholarships
Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camps
ACE camps are sponsored by EAA, FAA, college programs, private aviation groups, and community organizations. These camps usually last one week. The Heart of Carolina Chapter interfaces with these groups to provide attendees or sponsor students.
Students who attend ACE camps have the fortunate opportunity to see up close and first-hand, how our aviation system works from the inside looking out. They can tour facilities and meet experts who are willing to share their knowledge and experience about what it takes (and what NOT to do) to get into their aviation career fields. This insight will enable them to prepare NOW for their future and plan their academic course accordingly based on their desired occupation.
